God’s Testimony and the Divine Revelation of Jesus Christ
According to the scriptures, “...and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him….And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased ( Matthew 3:16-17 ).” The scripture above is one of the scriptures that many read and get confused about the deity of Jesus. They claim that even God testified that Jesus is His son, how then can He be co-equal with God? That’s because they don’t understand the meaning of the expression “Son of God”; and I’ve explained this several times, but it bears repeating.
The Deity of Jesus and the Godhead
Son of God means God in the flesh. First, understand this: there’re no three separate “beings” in heaven called, God the Father, God the Son, and then the Holy Spirit; no! There’s only ONE; and His Name is Jesus! The Father is in Jesus. The Holy Spirit is in Jesus. The Bible says in Him (Jesus Christ) dwells the fullness of the Godhead bodily: “For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily” ( Colossians 2:9). There’s only one God, and His Name is Jesus Christ. He’s the Word incarnate, which makes Him God incarnate ( John 1:1 & John 1:14).
Colossians 1:15 describes Him as the exact image of the unseen God; the visible representation of the invisible God. Furthermore, it was in Him that all things were created, in heaven and on earth, things seen and things unseen, whether thrones, dominions, rulers, or authorities; all things were created and exist through Him and in and for Him. Also, read Titus 2:13 and see that Jesus Christ is referred to as the great God: “Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ.”
The Importance of Accepting God’s Testimony
You have to believe and accept God’s testimony of Jesus Christ. Why is this important? It’s because if you don’t know who Jesus truly is, you can’t serve Him, you can’t live for Him. Moreover, the primary reason people will go to hell is for not believing and accepting God’s testimony of Jesus— who He is, and what He came to do. Faithful members of the Church witness that Jesus Christ is the Savior and Redeemer of the world.
The following table summarizes key scriptural references regarding the testimony of Jesus Christ provided in the material:

| John 1:1 & John 1:14 | Jesus is the Word incarnate and God incarnate. |
| Titus 2:13 | Jesus Christ is referred to as the great God and our Saviour. |
| Colossians 1:15 | He is the exact image of the unseen God. |
Seeking Wisdom: The Testimony of Joseph Smith
While deciding which church to join, Joseph Smith turned to the Bible for guidance. There he read, “Ask of God.” At the time this narrative begins, he was 14 years old, living with his family in New York, and earnestly considering which church to join. He was one day reading the Epistle of James, first chapter and fifth verse, which reads: “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.” Never did any passage of scripture come with more power to the heart of man than this did at this time to mine.
In accordance with his determination to ask of God, he retired to the woods to make the attempt. After he kneeled down and began to offer up the desires of his heart to God, he experienced a marvelous event. “I saw a pillar of light exactly over my head, above the brightness of the sun, which descended gradually until it fell upon me.” When the light rested upon him, he saw two Personages, whose brightness and glory defy all description, standing above him in the air. One of them spake unto him, calling him by name and said, pointing to the other—“This is My Beloved Son. Hear Him!”
