Understanding the Biblical Gift of Tongues

Should every Christian pray in tongues? There’s a growing movement today where churches encourage everyone to speak in tongues, as if it's the mark of true faith or spiritual maturity. But that’s not what Scripture teaches. The Bible describes only two types of tongues. Even then, not everyone will receive this gift. Paul clearly asks, “Do all speak in tongues?” (1 Corinthians 12:30), and the answer is no.

The Nature of the Gift

Tongues are not random sounds. They are real, God-given languages, just like we see in Acts 2 when people heard the gospel in their own native tongues. I do not believe the tongues in the book of Acts they refer to are anything other than other languages. Furthermore, it is important to understand that groaning is not a language and it is the Holy Spirit that groans on your behalf. It is clear that this implies to times you’re unable to pray maybe due to intense pain or grief.

Salvation and Spiritual Gifts

You do not need to speak in tongues to be saved, to prove you have the Holy Spirit, or to be spiritually mature. Not everyone does, but everyone can! Paul says to earnestly seek the gift of prophecy above all else, which means we can seek and be given different spiritual gifts. Mark 16:17 says: “And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues;” This is straight from Jesus’ mouth. All of the spiritual gifts listed in the New Covenant are based off of your faith. We shouldn’t tell people what’s not possible because we lack faith.

Order in the Church and Diverse Perspectives

Some believers disagree and argue that speaking in tongues is a gift for all believers. They feel that ‘Tongues’ is not just spiritual but it’s an identity and communication time with the Holy Spirit and from there we are able to advance in the spirit. Without it, some believe you can never say u totally have won or are complete in Christ. However, for others, the practical use is different. For example, if we are taking turns in praying loudly, one should not pray in tongues because brothers and sisters would OBVIOUSLY not understand and therefore not be unbuilt. One can pray in tongues by themselves or quietly.
