Is Deliverance Biblical? Examining the Scriptural Basis for Deliverance Ministry

Deliverance Ministry involves the practice of casting out demons. When Jesus Christ sent out his disciples, their first assignment was to cast out unclean spirits, and the Bible also says that the disciples demonstrated the power by casting out the devils. According to Mark 6 vs 7 & 13: "And he called unto him the twelve, and began to send them forth by two and two; and gave them power over unclean spirits; And they cast out many devils, and anointed with oil many that were sick, and healed them."

Arguments for Deliverance Ministry

There are two main arguments for Deliverance Ministry and they’re pretty simple. Number one, Jesus and the disciples did it. And number two, the Bible never forbids it. Beyond any shadow of a doubt, Jesus and Apostles and Matthew, Mark, Luke, and Acts, we see them casting out demons. So, if Jesus Christ talks about unclean spirit and the disciples cast out demons, why are some people saying there is no demon or deliverance is not scriptural?

Deliverance Ministries remind us of the reality of the spiritual world around us and remind us not to be engrossed in an empty rationalism. These ministries challenge the idea that personal problems can be reduced to purely psychological, social, physiological, or circumstantial factors. There’s definitely something deeper going on here; there is a battle waging for our souls. Along those lines, Deliverance Ministries often emphasize prayer and other biblical modes of spiritual warfare.

Potential Problems and Necessary Cautions

Pastor David Platt cautions believers to be on guard, yet to fully comprehend the beauty of deliverance ministry. One potential problem is extremism, fanaticism, and fundamentally causing confusion about major issues like the gospel by focusing on minor issues that take center stage. There is a danger of deliverance from how it approaches the Bible, interprets, and applies the Word.

Furthermore, Deliverance Ministry advocates often fail to distinguish between moral evil and natural evil. Casting out demons in cases of moral evil—such as anger, lust, pride, fear, or unbelief—is something that is not taught or illustrated anywhere in scripture. In response to moral evil, it’s not casting out, it’s calling people to repent. It is important to consider the importance of understanding Scripture in context and handling Scripture rightly.

Walking in Freedom

The truths shared in this message are crucial for believers who want to walk in freedom and minister to others effectively. You shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free (John 8:32). May God deliver people from spiritual ignorance in Jesus’ name and equip believers to help others walk in freedom!
