Discerning Biblical Truth: Navigating the New Age Movement and False Teachings
In today’s world, many are searching for meaning, peace, and healing. This longing often leads people down different spiritual paths—including one known as the New Age Movement. To understand the current climate, we must recognize that our unstable world doesn’t shake our God. While we and the world pass away His Word is everlasting.
What Is the New Age Movement?
The New Age Movement is not a structured religion with sacred texts or a central figure. Instead, it is a broad and fluid collection of spiritual beliefs and practices, drawn from a wide range of traditions, including Eastern religions, mysticism, self-help philosophies, and even elements of science fiction. Although diverse, these beliefs share a common goal: personal transformation, spiritual awakening, and the pursuit of divine power or knowledge through inward exploration.
At its core, the New Age worldview teaches that:
- Nature of God: God is not a personal being, but a universal force or energy that flows through everything.
- Human Divinity: All humans are divine, or can become divine through enlightenment.
- Relative Truth: Truth is relative, and everyone must find their own spiritual path.
- Purpose: The goal of life is self-realization, not repentance or relationship with a holy God.
Practices include meditation, energy healing, astrology, past-life regression, crystal therapy, and channeling spirits—each serving as tools for connecting to the “divine self” or the universe. This deeply contrasts with biblical Christianity, which teaches that there is one holy, personal God who created the universe, that sin separates us from Him, and that salvation comes only through Jesus Christ.
A Warning Against Deception
“I urge you, brothers and sisters, to watch out for those who cause divisions and put obstacles in your way that are contrary to the teaching you have learned. Keep away from them. 18 For such people are not serving our Lord Christ, but their own appetites. By smooth talk and flattery they deceive the minds of naive people. Romans 16:17-18”
Scripture provides a clear warning because the secular world is indifferent to what God’s Word says. Its ideas are poisoning minds. Romans 16:17-18 warns us to be on the watch for those that cause division. If what we are seeing and hearing conflicts with God’s truth, people will be led down the wrong path. There are also the smooth talkers who twist God’s Word using a worldly perspective. They sprinkle in just enough of God’s truth to persuade you that what your gut is telling you is wrong. The enemy uses false prophets that point to scripture; they take it out of context to twist its meaning. They will incorrectly interpret it for you using just enough truth to make it plausible. This is how many are led astray.
The Importance of Discernment
We should be following what scripture tells us not letting the news or social media influence us. If we are not in God’s Word on a consistent basis, those subtle lies become believable. We should be looking at the fruits of what someone is preaching. Are they staying true to scripture? Knowing this gives me peace. One day God will transform the moral order of our universe. He will bring judgment on all the nations of the earth. He has already determined what and when it will take place.
Applying Truth in Our Daily Lives
It isn’t just church leaders who needed to be grounded in God’s Word. We can’t have a spiritual awakening without the right leaders in our country. As Christians, we have an opportunity to use our voice to vote those into office, whose policies are most in line with God’s Word. This has nothing to do with political affiliation. You do your research. You look at each candidate’s platform. If their policies do not align with scripture, we should think twice before filling in the box beside their name. We do our due diligence.
“Devote yourselves to prayer with an alert mind and a thankful heart.”—Colossians 4:2
This is a time for Christian voters to stand in truth because we believe in the truth. God can work through us but not if we don’t take action and go to the polls. This isn’t a time to be quiet. It is time for us to take a stand for Jesus. If you are a registered voter, now is the time to let your voice be heard. I encourage you to not look at political party but rather vote for the candidates whose policies and belief system align with scripture.
Scriptural Comparison Data
- New Age View: God is a universal energy force; humans are divine; truth is relative; salvation through self-realization.
- Biblical View: God is a holy, personal Creator; humans are separated from God by sin; truth is absolute in His Word; salvation only through Jesus Christ.
