The Unchanging Word of God in a Changing World
We are living in a changing and increasingly dangerous world. Millions of people, especially young people, are trying to find a purpose and a meaning for their lives. We suffer. We struggle. We wonder, “Who am I? Why am I on this Earth?"
A Period of Transition
This is a period of social change, scientific change, and religious change. In the last few years, we’ve seen upheavals in every area of religious life, and we’re seeing it all over the world. With all this change, is there anything we can hold on to? Is there anything that gives meaning to life?
The Unchanging Nature of God
In the midst of these changes that we’ve been talking about, certain things never change. First, the nature of God has not changed. In all these thousands upon millions and billions of years, God has not changed. He said, “I am the Lord, I do not change” (Malachi 3:6). God is unchanging in His holiness; He is a holy God and a righteous God.
God is also unchanging in love. God loves you! And He is interested in you. He knows all about you, and He loves you! As the scripture declares: “God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8).
The Bible: The Constitution of Christianity
The Word of God has not changed. “The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God stands forever” (Isaiah 40:8). The Bible is the constitution of Christianity. Just as the United States Constitution is not of any private interpretation, neither is the Bible of any private interpretation. As the Constitution is the highest law of our land, so the Bible is the highest law of God.
True Christianity finds all of its doctrines in the Bible; true Christianity does not deny any part of the Bible; true Christianity does not add anything to the Bible. It is our guide. It’s our compass through life. And God says His Word shall stand forever.
The Message of Jesus Christ
The message of the Bible is Jesus Christ. Jesus’ name is the only name by which man can be saved (Acts 4:12) and He is to be celebrated above all earthly celebrations. No one has told more people, “God loves you,” than Billy Graham. He has touched the hearts and souls of people worldwide with the love of God and the truth of saving grace in Jesus Christ.
Every Christian should know these titles for Jesus and take time to reflect upon them:
- Advocate – 1 John 2:1
- Almighty – Revelation 1:8
- Bread of Life – John 6:35, 48
- Good Shepherd – John 10:11, 14
- King of Kings – 1 Timothy 6:15; Revelation 19:16
- Redeemer – Galatians 3:13; Titus 2:14
- Way, Truth, and Life – John 14:6
Confidence in the Future
What confidence and security we are given by the testimony concerning God’s Word from Genesis to Revelation. Every word of the Bible is true! Specifically, three events that we might otherwise brush aside as being too good to be true are given emphatic credibility as words we can trust regarding:
- OUR COMING CELEBRATION: The Wedding of the Lamb.
- OUR COMING HABITATION: The Dwelling of the Saints.
- OUR COMING RESTORATION: The Healing of the Nations.
How do we know for sure that one day the entire world will be at peace and the nations will be healed? It is because God gives us words that we can always trust; words that give us certainty about what’s to come.
