Christians Debate: Are Current Events in Israel Related to Biblical Prophecy?
Many U.S. evangelicals are debating whether current events in Israel are related to biblical prophecy. As the war between Israel and Hamas escalates, a main factor influencing evangelicals’ views on the current conflict is their opinion of Israel: Is it merely a modern state without spiritual significance? Or, is Israel the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy that factors into End Times events?
The Argument for Prophetic Fulfillment
Prominent California megachurch pastor, Greg Laurie, devoted part of his sermon to the topic, stating: “You’re seeing Bible prophecy fulfilled in your lifetime, in real-time before your very eyes.” Laurie noted that the Bible predicted hundreds of years ago that this large force from the north of Israel would attack her after she was regathered. Itinerant minister and best-selling author Joel Richardson also told The Roys Report (TRR) that he believes the re-formation of Israel in 1948 was a fulfillment of biblical prophecy.
“All of the stories in the Bible primarily revolve around Jerusalem, Israel, and the larger Middle East,” said Richardson. Richardson believes Christ will literally return to earth and establish his kingdom in Jerusalem for 1,000 years, known as the millennial kingdom. In this view, Israel being reestablished as a nation-state is a precursor to the fulfillment of biblical prophecy. Richardson argues that the Scriptures are clear that Jesus will come back to reestablish the throne of his father David in Jerusalem and rule the nations from that location.
Perspectives of Caution and Disagreement
However, author and theologian Joel McDurmon counters this application of the Bible to current events. He posted that what is happening in Israel is tragic and has nothing to do with Bible prophecy or Bible promises. Similarly, author Scot McKnight, professor of New Testament at Northern Seminary, does not view the re-establishment of the modern state of Israel as related to biblical prophecy.
McKnight and co-author Cody Matchett contend the Bible’s final book is about Christian discipleship for the church, then and today. McKnight explicitly rejects common categorizations, stating, “There is one passage in the whole Bible about the millennium, in Revelation 20. And almost nothing there is part of what many teach about the millennium today.” He also cautioned students of the Bible about translating passages about Israel as the current nation-state.
Biblical Signs and Historical Parallel Patterns
The Bible says we are in the end times, and with the turmoil and war taking place in Israel, many ask if Bible prophecy is being fulfilled. We hear about the Ezekiel 38 war, the anticipation of God’s divine intervention mentioned in Zechariah 12, and Jesus’ prophecies about the signs of the end times in Luke 21. Many believers point to the fact that Israel became a nation on May 14, 1948, fulfilling Isaiah 66:8.
There are also reasons to believe that the years 1948 and 2023 provide significant signs from God. In 1948 AM, Abraham, the father of Israel, was born (1948 years after creation as recorded in Genesis), while Modern Israel was re-born in 1948 AD. Some suggest that modern Israel is in the process of unveiling a pattern of events that resembles the life of Jesus.
Chronological Significance of Israel
| Time Period | Significant Event and Biblical Context |
|---|---|
| 1948 AM | Abraham, the father of Israel, was born 1948 years after creation. |
| 1948 AD | Modern Israel was re-born on May 14, fulfilling Isaiah 66:8. |
| 2023 AD | Israel reached 75 years as a nation; October 7 attack by Hamas. |
As this weary world speeds toward the second coming, it is crucial that believers have a proper understanding of Bible prophecy. Some argue that Hitler was the ‘dragon’ or ‘King Herod’ figure as the modern nation of Israel was born, with the Holocaust representing a slaughter of the innocent. However, many emphasize that the purpose of prophecy is always to reveal Jesus, and our view of the future must be shaped by Scripture, not today’s headlines.
