Biblical Perspectives on Politics and Authority

Understanding what the scripture says about governance and leadership is essential for a life of faith. According to the New International Version (NIV), the foundation of all power is divine, as Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.” This sovereignty is reflected in how global events unfold: He changes times and seasons; he deposes kings and raises up others. He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to the discerning.

The Duty of Prayer and Respect

The Bible provides clear instructions on how believers should interact with those in power. I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people— for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. Furthermore, we are called to maintain a standard of conduct: Show proper respect to everyone, love the family of believers, fear God, honor the emperor.

Priorities and Heavenly Citizenship

While we live under human systems, our primary allegiance remains spiritual. We must remember that our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ. This perspective helps when facing conflicting demands, as Peter and the other apostles replied: “We must obey God rather than human beings!” This is a necessary boundary because “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.”

Practical Conduct in Society

Believers are encouraged to focus on productive lives rather than political strife. The scripture advises to make it your ambition to lead a quiet life: You should mind your own business and work with your hands, just as we told you, so that your daily life may win the respect of outsiders and so that you will not be dependent on anybody. It is also important to avoid foolish controversies and genealogies and arguments and quarrels about the law, because these are unprofitable and useless. Ultimately, the Bible reminds us that blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord, the people he chose for his inheritance.
